Nigerian native, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, 24, accused of attempting to blow up a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day in 2009, appeared in court today to meet the jurors who would decide his fate.
U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds, presiding over the case will, over the next few days, question and select 12 potential jurors out of a 250 pool.
Abdulmutallab’s link to Al Queada has been implicitly expressed, with the Yemeni-based Al Queada group confirming their role in the failed bombing attacked.
A senior Al Qaeda leader, Anwar al-Awlaki, who was killed last week by a CIA-led U.S. drone strike, reportedly recruited Abdulmutallab for the attempted bomb plot.
According to reports released today, Abdulmutallab blurted out during the court “Anwar is alive”, acknowledging his connection to the slain leader.
He faces life in prison for eight felonies that include conspiracy to commit an act of terrorism, attempted murder and attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction.
