NECO To Release "Compromised" Results To Please Education Minister

The results of the 2011 National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations, which were held over two weeks ago, may be released shortly, without having been professionally certified.

Sources within the examinations body cite the brewing crisis, which may hamper the proper processing of the results, to involve issues of unpaid allowances of the staff of the Information, Communication and Technology Unit (ICT); poor staff strength of the agency; irregular promotion of staff; and the administrative ineptitude of the Registrar of the Council, Prof Promise Okpala.

A staff of the ICT unit of the Council who spoke on condition of anonymity said that on account of these issues, checking of" bad numbers" of more than 30 per cent of the students cannot be done. "Bad numbers" refers to examination numbers of students that are wrongly written.

In a bid to hurriedly release the results of candidates, the source said, the Head of the ICT unit threw every caution to the wind.

The source further disclosed that when the Minister of State for Education, Nyeson Wike, visited NECO last August, he was assured by the registrar that the 2011 results would be released within two weeks. The desperation to fulfill that promise is what is believed to be spurring the council to compromise the processing of the results.

"Any time from now, the results will be released and we staff know that only 70% of the 0MR sheets for all subjects have been captured. Students in writing their objective papers use OMR sheets. I can assure you that the results will be badly manipulated, irregular and doctored", the source said.

Some of the NECO staff also complained to our reporter about the management style of the registrar, calling him “incompetent” and “high-handed.”
